History of the COICA and its organizations

With the advance of the invasion of the Amazonía and the consequences of the impacts and threats of our lives and espiritualidad, environmental and social loss of our territories, damages, indiscriminate sacking of our resources and wisdom.

In order to defend our ideals and with the hope to continue being part of the world, of the Nature, it is born the Coordinator of the Indigenous Organizations of Amazonian River basin - COICA, the 14 of March of 1984 in the city of File-Peru, during the I Congress of the Indigenous Organizations of the Amazonian River basin, in which they participated: AIDESEP, Peru; CONFENIAE, Ecuador; CIDOB, Bolivia; ONIC, Colombia; and UNI, Brazil.

In the referred congress Mr. Evaristo Nungkuag Ikanan was chosen like President, of the Aguaruna Town, in representation of AIDESEP, and acted in the period from 1984 to 1992. Lima was the host city until 1992 and in the year of 1993 it changed for Quito - Ecuador, where it has permanent address.

The II and III Congress were spaces of consolidation in the different levels and in the IV, made in Manaus - Brazil, November of 1992 it has chosen itself to Mr. Valerio Grefa Uquiña like General Coordinator, replacing the figure of the President. In this same Congress, new organizations were affiliated like: ORPIA, Venezuela; OIS, Surinam; APA, Guyana; FOAG, French Guyana; and COIAB, Brazil in substitution to UNI. Later OPIAC, Colombia replaces to ONIC.

The history of the COICA is the history of each one of its organizations, in its fight to construct effective tools to manage to defend our rights.
