Greetings from the Coordinator of the Indigenous Organizations of the Amazonian River Basin – COICA

Within the framework of information, knowledge and defending the rights of Indigenous People in the national and international arena, COICA together with Amazon Alliance and support of IPAM has decided to create and to convene the ''WORKSHOP ON CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE AMAZON RIVER BASIN: DIAGNOSTIC OF THE CURRENT SITUATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF STRATEGIC ACTION'' , to be held in Quito Ecuador, 7, 8 and 9 of August 2008.

The objectives of the Workshop are the following

•  Statement in an objective manner of Climate Change situation globally.

•  Lectures concerning the activities and consequences of climate change in the Amazon River Basin.

•  Develop a plan and a strategy for action from the proposals agreed

In addition to the participants of the member organizations of COICA, we as well count on lecturers of the Climate Alliance, IPAM, Amazon Alliance, and COICA itself, that allow us to experience the general and detailed picture of topics related to positive and negative impacts of Climate Change in territories of Indigenous Peoples of the Amazon.

Expected Results:

•  A Report of the Workshop on Climate Change in the Amazon basin.

•  Consensual plan and Strategic Action agreed in the short, medium and long term.

•  A narrative and financial report on the workshop on climate change.

Methodology

COICA's Coordinator of Territories, Environment and Biodiversity will present the objectives and aims of the Workshop on Climate Change in the Amazon River Basin.

International Climate Change experts will present the actual state of Climate Changes related issues and the outcomes of the meeting held in Manaus, Brazil, and Bonn, Germany.

The consultants, representatives and leaders of the nine (9) member organization from the Amazon Basin: APA (Guyana), AIDESEP (Perú), CIDOB (Bolivia), COIAB (Brazil), CONFENIAE (Ecuador), FOAG (French Guyana), OIS (Suriname), ORPIA (Venezuela); and, OPIAC (Colombia) will be requested to present the actual Climate Change situation on their correspondent country, concerning the Amazon Basin region.

The participants in the Workshop on Climate Change will be requested to form two or three working groups, for the elaboration of a consensual plan and strategic action in the short, medium and long term. These working groups will nominate a coordinator and a facilitator, whom will further present the working groups' conclusions to the plenary.

At the end of the meeting a technical team will collaborate in developing a Report, in the form that organizations members of COICA can follow up in each country at regional and international level on the main conclusions and agreements.
